HOLIDAYS IN FISS

As you leave Landeck, driving along the Inn towards South Tyrol or Switzerland, the sun might suddenly disappear, even if it's early in the afternoon. The mountains reach great heights here, and their shadows stretch far across the valley. If you lease the busy main road to the west, following the sings to Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis , you will soon be pleasantly surprised. Once you have passed the first three serpentines, the sun returns, and the higher you wiggle your way up, the stronger it shines. After the last serpentine  the road peters out on a terrific plateau. The Tyroleans, quite rightly, call it their 'sunny plateau', for here the sun shines more often and more intensive than anywhere else in the country.

A village conscious of its beauty

Considering Fiss  is such a small place, it has a strong air of self-awareness and a very welcoming spirit. Even though the town has expanded, Fiss is still a village at heart - spruce and straightforward, with Rhaeto-Romanic influences. It calls itself a family village, while the provincial government of Tyrol uses the title 'Family Tirol Dorf', awarded for the quality and variety of its holiday offerings. Families are the target customers in the local hotel and catering business. While exercise-conscious parents take advantage of the excellent 'WellfitFiss' offerings, the 'Mini & Maxi Club' organizes creative fun and adventure programmes for children in three age groups.

Winter sport region Fiss

If you drive towards Fiss you get the impression that the village, situated quite snugly on the slope, looked for its own little spot in the sun. In actual fact, Fiss has a lot of history and has a character of its own. The village has a rural atmosphere, with many vacation apartments and family-run hotels. The access road that connects the Inn valley with the plateau leads past Fiss underneath the village centre, so the place itself is very peaceful.

Getting to Tyrol's Ski Dimension is very easy here. Both the 'Schönjochbahn' and the 'Möseralmbahn' bring you direclty to the ski runs, and then there is 'Waldbahn' station between Fiss and Serfaus that opened up in the winter season 2005/2006.

One of Fiss' most oustanding features is the terrain park. Snowboarders have their own little 'scenes' that are very difficult to break into. In the last few years, Fiss has put a lot of effort into innovation - and suceeded. Its terrain park is now part of the 'scene'. A fun and practice area, BoarderX, an undulating run, rails and music non-stop make the park exactly what boarders would consider 'cool'. The 'Boarderclub' offers ideal meeting place for insiders and supports those who want to achieve the sacred heights of Levels 7-9.

Even without a board under your feet, fun is guaranteed in Fiss: the Fisser Flieger, installed in 2006, lifts off for soaring flights over the snowy slopes (safety ensured by steel cables). Experience moments of zero-gravity by the newest attraction, the Skyswing, before you're pressed into your seat by 4g.

For youngsters who do not know yet whether they are the snowboarder or the carver type, because they are barely able to stand poperly on either board, there is 'Berta's Kinderland'. This extensive winter world for children is situated in the middle of 'Sonnenbahn' station and comprises a kindergarten and ski school, several fun and adventure areas, a tubing track and a children's restaurant called 'Berta's Kinderplanet'.

As to the nightlife in Fiss: make a mental note of Tuesdays. That's when 'Nightflow' takes place, a journey through time on the snowy Möseralm, including dinner and night skiing. Nightlife extraordinaire: every Tuesday, 'Nightflow 3.0' takes place on the Möseralm, featuring spectacular Shows, a laser show and fireworks. with great effects supplied by the Fisser Flieger and Skyswing. Dinning by moonlight and night skiing on illuminated pistes make the event an all-round experience.
