Oberer Spinnsee – Spinnseesteig trail

Starting point: Schönjochbahn top station
Character: A prize winning, superb mountain trail through the lonely and unspoilt nature of the Urgtal valley – a scenic jewel. Due to the length of the trail, you should take the very first cablecar to the Fisser Joch. The trail is somewhat rocky and requires sure-footedness.
Walking time: Oberen Spinnsee 2½ hours, Schöngampalm 5 hours

Description: From the cable car station (F087) cross westwards the flat trail on the slope below the Zwölferkopf (F097) over to the Zwölferjoch (F101). After a short distance on the ridge, the Spinseensteig path leads to the right (F102), descending slightly, through the northern slopes of the Sattelköpfe and a broad ridge with fine views and Steinmann cairn (F103). From here, continue over flat grassy slopes and boulders into the valley (F104 crossing on trail no. 17 to Brunnenjoch) and ascend slightly to a wooden bridge at the brook (F105, to the right, trail no. 17 leads to the Schöngampalm along the valley, 1 ½ hours). To the Spinseen lakes, to the left, a little steeper, along the brook, over rocky (chamoix) terrain and onto a broad ridge and then to the Oberen Spinnsee lake (F106, 2 1/2 hours). Behind the lake you cross the trail leading to the Spinnscharte (F106a). Follow this to the right, and you walk over flat alpine pastures, then descending a bit more steeply, the Unteren Spinnsee lake (20 mins.) and on – descending steeply – to the Urgtal valley (F107). Walk along the brook on a flat trail to the Lader Urgalpe and past the small Urgsee lake to the Schöngampalm (F039, 2½ from the Oberen Spinnsee lake).
From Schöngampalm: ascent by the Schönjochbahn 1 ½ hours, Fisser Almweg trail to Fiss 3 hours, descent to Hochgallmigg 1 ½ hours, descent to Ladis 3 hours.
